Vans was founded in 1966 by brothers Paul and James Van Doren, along with Gordon C. Lee, who opened a small shoe factory and retail store in California. In that time and geographical place, the most successful sports were surfing and skateboarding. It was March 16, 1966, the day the first Vans store opened in Anaheim, California.
