Thomas Jacob Hilfiger (Elmira, March 24, 1951) is an American fashion designer, known for founding the fashion house Tommy Hilfiger. After starting his career co-founding a chain of jeans and fashion stores called People's Place in New York State in the 1970s, he began designing preppy clothes for his namesake men's clothing line in the 1980s. The company later expanded into women's clothing and various luxury items such as perfumes and went public in 1992. In 2006, Hilfiger sold his company to Apax Partners, which subsequently sold it in 2010 to Phillips-Van Heusen. He remains the principal designer of the company, leading the design team and overseeing the entire creative process.
