SUNDEK
In 1958 San Francisco, a swimwear brand from the early 1940s, SUN-DEK of California, decided to expand its collection by launching a small line of nylon or cotton-nylon shorts specifically designed for surfing. Thus, SUNDEK was born, one of the first brands dedicated to this sport. In the 1960s, SUNDEK expanded its market, growing from California to Hawaii and the East Coast. Thanks to innovative solutions like the use of colorful printed patterns on cotton and velcro closures instead of zippers, the garments quickly became popular. During those years, many young surfers were sponsored by SUNDEK as part of a campaign to promote the brand and this new sport, which was destined to become a lifestyle coveted by many. In 1972, the era of the so-called Rainbow Boardshorts began. The technical qualities of this garment and its original design, featuring the unmistakable rainbow, made it a true icon among surfers. Sundek continued its commitment by sponsoring the ESA (Eastern Surfing Association) and the “SUNDEK Invitational.” Many athletes of those years, such as Kelly Slater, Sean Slater, Ken Bradshaw, Corkey Carrol, and Mark Foo, contributed to the growth of Sundek and this wonderful sport. Designed in 1972 to meet the needs of Californian surfers, the distinctive double layer of quick-drying nylon with triple stitching ensures long-lasting durability. Characterized by the unmistakable rainbow on the back, these shorts have captivated entire generations of young people, becoming one of the most popular surf garments on the market. While they were once primarily used as sportswear, today they have become a classic in beachwear.
